Green leaves in hundreds of trees turn brown, crumbling into ashes. Ponds and lakes fill up quickly with filth. Mountains of waste get piled up in no time. We may think environmental degradation during Deepavali happens only for a few days. But, the negative impact it creates on the planet remains like a scar for many years to come. We need to change the way we celebrate Deepavali and the way we teach our children about this festival. A Green Diwali is on everyone’s mind as the festival of lights looms on the horizon. Diwali is one festival that I have noticed brings people together but at the same time, also creates a lot of different kinds of pollution. my two cents to the environment would be to help people make their own decorations and gifts. My workshop revolves around how you can make this Diwali eco-friendly and get involved with your family. While oil lamps are eco-friendly, oil spills that tend to happen are wasteful.

A ‘Cracker free Deepavali’ would be the best step forward. The money spent on buying crackers could be donated to doing good work in your own city, town or village.
Do not throw festival waste on the roads.
We could segregate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste and dispose of it responsibly.
